Before starting any business, first think about the precautionary measures you should take. Do your homework and study the area, the demographics, the other businesses in the area, and if your business has a need there. Another precautionary measure you should take is to look into insurance. Determine what it is you want to cover, and think about the what ifs! Make sure you have adequate insurance to protect your business, your investment, others, and you.

If you do not know where to start, think about making an appointment with "S.C.O.R.E." (Service Corp Of Retired Executives). "S.C.O.R.E." is sponsored by the US Small Business Administration and is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing counseling to small businesses. Many Chapters offer to counsel established and prospective businesses free of charge.

Opening A Business In Havelock?

If you are thinking about opening a new business in the City of Havelock, the following suggestions may help you get started.

Check for Compliance with Zoning and City Ordinance

We recommend that you first contact the Planning Department at 199 Cunningham Boulevard, Havelock or by calling (252) 444-6400.

Schedule a Fire Inspection

Schedule a fire inspection by contacting the Fire Department at 2 Governmental Avenue, Havelock or by calling (252) 444-6442.

Schedule a Building Inspection

A City Inspector can be reached at 199 Cunningham Boulevard, Havelock or by calling (252) 444-6412. Please remember to schedule your final inspection before opening your business.

Notify Police of Emergency Contact Numbers

You should inform the Police Department. They are located at 2 Governmental Avenue, Havelock or by calling (252) 447-3212.

Establish Water and Sewer Service

To establish water and sewer service, contact the Revenue Collection Department at 1 Governmental Avenue, Havelock or by calling (252) 444-6404 or (252) 444-6405.

Obtain a Privilege License

You must obtain a privilege license at the City Clerk's office at 1 Governmental Avenue, Havelock or by calling (252) 444-6406. This should be the last step prior to opening your business.

A Business Which Serves Food or Alcoholic Beverages

If your business involves serving food, please remember to contact Craven County Health Department at (252) 636-4920. If your business involves alcoholic beverages, please contact the NC Alcohol Law Enforcement at (252) 514-4720.

All of the above can be completed with one stop at the City Hall Complex other than, again, those who serve food and/or alcoholic beverages.
