Hope everyone had a great holiday!

We are looking forward to a fantastic New Year. Already, we are forming committees for the events of 2009, the Spelling Bee, Youth Leadership Program, Salute to Our Vets, Golf Tournament, and our Chili Festival. If you would like to volunteer to work on any of these committees please call me.

Thanks to all our chamber members for a wonderful 2008. Although the HAVELOCK Chamber of Commerce saw lots of changes in 2008, we had a very successful year. I am looking forward to next year with great anticipation of the new challenges and working with each of you.

Small Business Administration - Free Online Courses

If your business is slow this time of year, maybe you should invest a small amount of time in some free online courses thru the Small Business Administration at www.sba.gov/services/training/onlinecourses/index.html There are a number of courses in the following categories: Starting a Business, Surviving in a Down Economy, Business Management, Financing & Accounting, Marketing and Advertising, Government Contracting, Business Planning, E-Commerce, International Trade, and Federal Tax Training.

If you do complete a course, let us know what you think! We would be glad to pass on your recommendations.

Why Target New Residents?

--Up to 20% of your customers can be lost annually due to relocation.

--Replace them with newcomers to our area.

--Newcomers are eager to turn their new residence into their HOME. They have a long list of needs.

--They have a high level of excitement, optimism and momentum toward personalizing their home and finding new local services to replace those left behind.

--They are less affected than regular consumers by economic factors: within the first 6 months of their move they expect to spend and DO spend significantly more than other consumers.

--Less price sensitivity during the "settling in" process.

--The cliche, "only one chance to make a first impression" certainly applies to the newcomer, who is busy forming impressions and developing new habits in their new surroundings. Those businesses which serve them well from the start will be rewarded with long term loyalty.
